Insulated Bulletproof Glass Units
Insulated bulletproof glass units (IBGUs) are advanced glazing systems that combine ballistic protection with thermal insulation. These units consist of multiple layers of laminated or tempered glass, often interspersed with polycarbonate or other polymer interlayers for bullet resistance, sealed with an air or gas-filled cavity to provide insulation. Essentially, they merge the principles of bulletproof glass and double- or triple-glazing to offer both security and energy efficiency.
The bullet-resistant layers are engineered to absorb and disperse the energy of bullets, keeping fragments contained and preventing penetration. The insulating cavity—sometimes filled with argon or another inert gas—reduces heat transfer, improves indoor thermal comfort, and lowers energy consumption. Laminated layers can also include UV-blocking or acoustic interlayers, enhancing occupant comfort by reducing noise and protecting interiors from sun damage.
