This deliberate mismatch improves acoustic performance. Sound waves travel differently through glass of varying thickness, so using unequal panes disrupts the resonance that allows certain frequencies—especially traffic or aircraft noise—to pass through. As a result, asymmetrical glazing can reduce perceived external noise more effectively than a standard symmetrical double-glazed window of the same overall thickness.
Asymmetrical Glazing
Asymmetrical glazing refers to a glass assembly in which the two panes of a double- or triple-glazed unit differ in thickness or type rather than being identical. Instead of using, for example, two 6 mm sheets of glass, an asymmetrical unit might pair a 6 mm outer pane with a 4 mm or 8 mm inner pane, or combine one pane of laminated safety glass with a standard float glass pane.
