The problem it solves
A frameless invisible grill anchors each cable directly into the building. That gives the cleanest possible result and requires the structure at every one of those points to be sound.
On a great many Mumbai balconies, it is not. Parapets get repaired, slab edges get re-screeded, waterproofing layers get added, and what looks like solid concrete may be 40 mm of make-good over something older. Drilling dozens of small anchors into that is not a good idea.
A framed system puts the cables in their own aluminium frame. The frame carries the tension internally and transfers it to a small number of fixings chosen where the structure is genuinely sound.
How it is built
A perimeter frame is fabricated to the surveyed opening. Cables are tensioned within it, top to bottom or side to side depending on the layout. The completed panel is then fixed into the opening.
Because the tension is resolved inside the frame, the building sees only the fixing loads at a few points rather than cable tension distributed along its whole edge.
The trade-off
There is a visible slim aluminium perimeter that a frameless system does not have.
In practice this is minor and often an advantage. Powder-coated to match the window frames or the parapet colour, the frame reads as part of the opening. It also gives a clean edge where the parapet top is uneven — which, on an older balcony, it usually is.
Removable as a unit
Worth knowing about before you choose. The whole panel can be unbolted and taken out, then refitted, which makes several later jobs much easier:
- external façade repair or painting
- replacing the glazing behind the grill
- waterproofing work on the balcony
- moving furniture that will not pass the opening
With a frameless system, every one of those means removing and re-anchoring individual cables.
Where we recommend it
- balconies with repaired or re-screeded parapets
- lightweight or later-added enclosure walls
- rented flats, where a removable, reversible installation matters
- openings where the grill will need to come out periodically
Everything else is the same
Cable spacing to safety standards, marine-grade stainless throughout, cables individually tensioned and adjustable. The layout can be vertical, horizontal or mesh within the frame, and a sliding section can be built in where part of the run needs to open.
